Agency Overview

The Town of DeWitt Police Department has 45 sworn officers. It is comprised of the Chief of Police, 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 7 Sergeants, 4 Investigators, 28 Officers, 1 Evidence Officer, 1 Training Officer, 2 School Resource Officers (SPO's), 4 Civilian employees and 2 Consultants. Services provided by the DeWitt Police include 24 hour patrol coverage, criminal investigations, crime scene processing, community policing, motorcycle unit, and youth education programs.
 
The Chief of Police is the Chief Executive Officer of the agency, and has full authority and responsibility for the management, direction, fiscal administration and control of the operation and administration of the department.  The Captain oversees the daily police operations and reports directly to the Chief of Police. Additionally, the Captain serves as the Human Resource Manager, Accreditation, Information Technology Systems Administrator, oversees the Accident Reconstruction Team, Body Cameras, Discovery and supervises the Clerical Staff.   One Lieutenant is the Commanding Officer of the Criminal Investigation Division and Internal Affairs.  In addition, the Criminal Investigation Division Lieutenant oversees  Training, Warrants, to include the Warrant Execution Team and Records Management.  The second Lieutenant serves as the Commanding Officer of the Patrol Division, Field Training Program, Community Policing, Special Events coordination, Traffic Unit, Evidence and Property and is in charge of the department’s Fleet.  The Patrol Division is further supervised by six (6) Sergeants assigned to one of the three watches: A-Watch (2300-0700 hrs), B-Watch (0700-1500 hrs) and C-Watch (1500-2300 hrs).
 
The DeWitt Police Department is a highly trained and professional law enforcement agency.  We are a full service Police Agency that has nearly 30,000 calls for service per year.  On January 1, 2015 the DeWitt Police Department took over police services for the Village of East Syracuse.  DeWitt Police Officers are routinely trained above and beyond mandated levels in order to provide the highest level of service.  Currently the DeWitt Police Department has certified Crime Scene Specialists, Accident Investigation Technicians, Police Bicycle Officers, Police Instructors, SAVE Instructors, FBI Defensive Tactic Instructors, NYS MPTC Certified Firearms Instructors, CPR/AED Instructors, EVOC Instructors and FBI Crisis Negotiators.

The Town of DeWitt Police Department was initially New York State accredited in 1998 under Chief James R. Delapp (Retired - 2001).  In April of 2002 Eugene J. Conway was sworn in as Chief of Police and was committed to the New York State Accreditation Program thereafter.  In December of 2014 James C. Hildmann was sworn in as Chief of Police and the Department became CALEA accredited on April 2, 2016.  On January 9, 2018 John J. Anton was sworn in as Chief of Police and strived for excellence in the performance of providing police service.  On April 30, 2020 Chase L. Bilodeau was sworn in as Chief of Police and continues to find effective and progressive methods of providing the best police service to the DeWitt Community.
